Eric Hoy Tucker
Associate Professor of Voice
Basso-cantante Eric Hoy Tucker, a native of Fairmont, West Virginia received his bachelor of music in vocal performance from Florida State University, master of music in vocal performance from the University of Illinois and his doctor of musical arts from Ohio State University.
His operatic portrayals range from “Figaro” in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro to “Superintendent Budd” in Britten’s Albert Herring and “Colline” in La Bohéme. Professional companies with which Tucker has performed include: Florida State Opera, Illinois Opera Theatre, Muddy River Opera, South Georgia Opera, Columbus Light Opera, Canyon Moon Theatre, and the Ohio Opera Theatre. As a bass soloist, Tucker has performed with such orchestras as the Orquesta Sinfonica de Trujillo, The Midland Symphony Orchestra, the Sierra Vista Symphony, the Hilton Head Orchestra, the Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra, the Florida Chamber Symphony, and the Beloit Janesville Symphony in such works as Mozart’s Requiem, Handel’s Messiah, Beethoven’s Mass in C, Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, Bach’s Saint John Passion, Saint Saën’s Christmas Oratorio as well as concert versions of opera.
Tucker has performed recitals and presented master classes in Nanjing, China and Trujillo, Peru. He was a soloist with Orquesta Sinfonica deTrujillo as part of the XII Internacional Bach Festival in Trujillo, Peru. He has performed Handel’s Messiah and Puccini’s La Bohéme with the Midland Symphony Orchestra. A champion of the art song recital, Tucker has performed recitals featuring the music of Schubert, Strauss, Ibert, and Wolf. He toured the Midwest with pianist John Wustman as part of Wustman’s Schubert Recital Series.
Tucker has served as Musical Director for various regional theater companies such as the Oak Creek Theatre and Canyon Moon Theatre in performances of “A Grand Night for Singing,” “Your a Good Man Charlie Brown,” “Once on this Island,” “Once Upon a Mattress,” “Side by Side by Sondheim,” “The Drunkard,” “My Way” “Suds”, and “Nunsense”.
Tucker’s students have gone on to appear with opera companies throughout the country including: The Chicago Lyric, Pine Mountain Music Festival, The Ohio Light Opera, and Arizona Opera. Additionally, his students have fared well in competitions, most notably, the Metropolitan Opera Competition, and National Association Teachers Singing competitions, at both the district and regional auditions. Several of Tucker’s students have received full graduate assistantships at leading schools of music and are now pursuing advanced graduate degrees. Prior to coming to Central Michigan University, Tucker served on the faculties of Muskingum College, the University of North Dakota at Grand Forks, and Northern Arizona University.
Tucker resides in Mount Pleasant with this wife, soprano-Antoinette Torres Tucker and two daughters, Miss Sophia and Miss Olivia.
