Philip Pfaltzgraff
Philip
Pfaltzgraff is a faculty member in the School of Music at CMU,
serving as Instructor in Collaborative Piano Studies. He is a
1971 graduate (Bachelor Music Education) from Westmar College,
LeMars, Iowa. He has done additional graduate work at the
University of Iowa and Drake University and subsequently completed
Masters Degrees here at Central Michigan University (2003, 2004) in
Organ Performance and Music Education. His professional life
has centered around teaching vocal music in public and private
schools (in Iowa, Florida and Michigan) as well as in the Ministry
of Music in Assembly of God churches in Des Moines (Iowa),
Southfield (Michigan), St. Petersburg (Florida), a Presbyterian
Church in Bay City (Michigan) and currently at First United
Methodist Church in Mount Pleasant, MI. Philip was the
pastor and music director of a church in northern Michigan for 7
years before coming to graduate school at CMU. Philip is
married to Sherry Lynn (Hunkins) Pfaltzgraff and they have one son,
Phillip Nathan Pfaltzgraff (of Portland, OR); they have one
grandson, (Phillip) Parker-Dale Smelser, also of Portland.
While here in Mt. Pleasant, Philip has recorded a series of
improvisation CD's on the piano as well as on the organ. Phil
has also written a book entitled A Piano Improvisation Manual.
He is the composer of a number of choral works, one of which (The
Gospel Mass) was premiered in 2003 by the CMU Concert Choir,
an octavo which was premiered by the CMU Woman's Chorus (a setting
of Psalm 121) , and two choral works (I'm Goin'
Home and Blessed), which had their Michigan
premier by the Central Michigan High School Honors Choir ensembles.
