Dr.
Alan Gumm
Alan Gumm
is associate
professor of music education at Central Michigan University, where
his responsibilities include music education methods, Women’s
Chorus, vocal techniques, graduate research, student teacher
observation, and music education area coordinator. He is the author
of the book Music Teaching Style: Moving Beyond Tradition,
contributing author for The Music Director’s Cookbook: Creative
Recipes for a Successful Program, editor and contributing author
to The Choral Director’s Cookbook: Insights and Inspired Recipes
for Beginners and Experts, and his research and writing can be
found in the Journal of Research in Music Education,
Council for Research in Music Education Bulletin, Music Educators
Journal, Choral Journal, Visions of Research in Music
Education, and the Southeastern Journal of Music Education.
In addition, he serves on the editorial board of the Journal of
Music Teacher Education. Dr. Gumm’s previous experience
includes public school choral and general music teaching in Kansas
and higher education teaching at the University of Utah, Ithaca
College in New York, and McPherson College in Kansas. His
conducting experience includes many U.S. and European choir tours,
and he was the founding conductor of the McPherson Chamber
Orchestra. He holds a doctor of philosophy from the University of
Utah, a master of music from Fort Hays State University, and a
bachelor of arts from McPherson College.
