Isabel Barbara
O'Hagin,
Ph.D. (University of Arizona), Assistant Professor of Music
Education at Central Michigan University; teaches both undergraduate
and graduate courses in general music, early childhood music,
introduction to research, and Kodály and Orff-Schulwerk approaches;
directs the Central Michigan University Children’s Choir and the
Early Childhood Music and Movement Laboratory--a lab practicum for
undergraduate music education students. She is certified in
teacher-training courses Orff-Schulwerk, Kodály, and Dalcroze
Eurhythmics, and has taught movement for Orff-Schulwerk Level I and
Level II courses. Dr O’Hagin has extensive teaching experience in
general music, choir, dance, and drama at elementary and secondary
levels, and served as resource specialist for the performing arts in
the largest school district in Arizona. She previously taught at
Bowling Green State University. Her research interests include
children’s musical play, early childhood music education,
kinesthetic responses to music, multicultural music education, and
teacher education. Her publication credits include the Bulletin
of the Council for Research in Music Education, College Music
Symposium, International Journal of Music Education, Teaching Music,
General Music Today, Orff Echo, Triad, and Michigan Music
Educator, and most recently a book chapter, Reggio Emilia and
Musical Learning, for the Canadian Early Childhood Education
Series, Dr. O’Hagin is currently National Chair of the Research
Interest Group (RIG) and is past National Chair of the Research
Advisory Review Panel for the American Orff-Schulwerk Association.
She serves as Editor of the Michigan Music Educator and
Multicultural Music Advisor serves the Michigan Music Educators
Association Executive Board. She is an active music
education clinician/workshop presenter and has presented her
research at many national and international conferences including:
International Society for Music Educators, International Conference
for the College Music Society, International Research in Music
Education, Music Educators National Conference, American Orff-Schulwerk
Association, Organization of American Kodály Educators, National
Association for the Education of the Young Child, College Music
Society, Society for Ethnomusicology, Mountain Lake Colloquium,
Music for Young Children, and various university symposia. Dr.
O’Hagin enjoys performing as a soprano soloist in recitals, and was
awarded the Teacher of the Arts Fellowship from the Kennedy Center
for the Performing Arts in recognition for her outstanding work in
arts education. She is recipient of the President’s Research
Investment Fund at Central Michigan University.
