R. Woods,
professor of music and director of orchestral
studies, at Central Michigan University, holds a bachelor of music
degree from Heidelberg College (Ohio) and a doctor of musical arts
in orchestral conducting from the College-Conservatory of Music,
University of Cincinnati. Dr. Woods past appointments have included
orchestras in Pennsylvania, Kansas, and Arkansas. As music
director/conductor of the North Arkansas Symphony Orchestra and the
Music Festival of Arkansas, he developed ensembles that received
national attention in the press and on National Public Radio. Dr
Woods is in constant demand as a guest conductor and has been on
podiums of orchestras throughout the United States, Poland, Belgium,
England, Russia, Canada, and South America. His recording of the
William Grant Still Symphony No. 3 received rave reviews from
critics nationwide. In addition, he is a champion of new music and
has worked with John Corigliano, Stephen Paulus, George Crumb, Libby
Larsen and Donald Erb in collaborative events. In addition to his
duties at CMU, Woods is Conductor Emeritus of the Midland Symphony
Orchestra. He has worked with numerous world renowned soloists
including Itzhak Perlman, Edgar Meyer, Mark O’Connor, John O’Connor,
Philip Myers, Jerry Hadley, Gary Hoffman, Richard Stoltzman, Pascal
Roge, Anne Akiko Meyers, Ewa Podles, Sharon Isbin, Dave Brubeck,
David Bilger, James McCracken and the Juilliard String Quartet.
