Keith Clifton

Dr. Keith Clifton, associate professor of musicology and music theory/ literature area coordinator, teaches all levels of western music history and courses in popular music and world music. Prior to his 2002 appointment at CMU, he served as assistant professor of musicology at the University of Central Arkansas, and has also taught at the University of Northern Iowa and Northwestern University. He holds a bachelor’s degree in voice, cum laude, from the University of Texas at Austin, M.M. and Ph.D. degrees in musicology from Northwestern University, and a Certificat de Langue Française from the Collège Internationale de Cannes, France.

Dr. Clifton is a specialist in 20th century French music, with particular interests in the works of Ravel and Les Six. His other research areas include opera, American music, popular music, and gender studies. An active researcher with numerous publications to his credit, his work appears in Notes, The Opera Journal, The Journal of Singing, The Reader’s Guide to Music History, The Journal of Musicological Research, Canadian University Music Review, The Encyclopedia of the Romantic Era, and Madonna's Drowned Worlds. He has lectured and presented scholarly papers throughout the United States and abroad for the American Musicological Society, International Musicological Society meetings in Belgium and Switzerland, the Songs Across the Americas Festival in Bolivia, the National Association of Teachers of Singing, Feminist Theory and Music, the College Music Society, the Chicago Civic Orchestra, the Midland Symphony Orchestra, and the Elderhostel program.

In addition to his musicological work, Dr. Clifton is an active performer of opera, choral music, and art song. He served as tenor section leader at Winnetka (IL) Congregational Church from 1993–1998, and has performed as a soloist and choral singer for American choirs and festivals in Europe, Great Britain, and Peru. His scholarly work on American song includes a forthcoming book for Scarecrow Press titled Recent American Art Song: A Guide. Professional memberships include the American Musicological Society, the Society for American Music, and the College Music Society, for which he serves as newsletter editor for the Great Lakes Chapter.
