Virginia Kerwin
Virginia Kerwin is the full-time Executive Director of the Michigan
School Vocal Music Association. She received a Bachelor of Arts
degree in Education from the University of Delaware, a Master of
Arts degree in Education from Calvin College, and has done
post-graduate work with Joseph Huszti, Anton Armstrong, and Roger
Taylor.
In addition to fulfilling her administrative duties in this
position, she has been a strong advocate for comprehensive vocal
music education. She has represented MSVMA on the ArtsArk, MYAF, and
MMC Boards, and has participated in numerous Michigan Department of
Education arts education projects, most recently the committee to
establish the Michigan High School Content Expectations for the
arts. Virginia enjoyed a successful career teaching vocal music with
the Big Rapids Public Schools.
She was named MSVMA Teacher of the Year in 1998 and received the
Outstanding Administrator Award from the Michigan Music Educators
Association in 2006. An active adjudicator and clinician, she served
on the staff of the University of Michigan All-State Camp at
Interlochen, conducted the Michigan Ambassadors of Music European
Tour Choirs for three years, and currently conducts the SSAA high
school choir at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp. She serves on the ACDA-Michigan
board of directors as the Women’s Choir Chair.
In the Big Rapids community she is the founding director of Voca
Lyrica, an adult women’s choir. Voca Lyrica has sung under the guest
conductorship of Hilary Apfelstadt and Sandra Snow, and most
recently with Nancy Menk at Carnegie Hall. They will perform at the
Sydney Opera house in the summer of 2007 as part of the World Voices
Australia Festival. Virginia sang with the Grand Rapids Symphony
Chorus under the direction of Anton Armstrong, and appears in the
west Michigan area regularly as a soprano soloist. In 2004 she sang
with the Carnegie Hall Choral Workshop under the direction of
Charles Dutoit.
